Sometimes I get the feeling that my brothers and sisters in Christ are not doing their rightful duty to pray for our President and for our country. God wants to bless our country, but that won’t happen if we don’t pray. Here are five reasons why Christians should pray for our President and our country:
1. Prayers Works
In Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, in Matthew 7:7-11, Jesus instructed His disciples on asking and receiving. He told them that if they will just ask, He will give to them, if they seek they will find, and if they knock the door will be opened to them.
In John 14:13-14 Jesus states, “And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.” In John 16:24 Jesus says, “Until now you have asked nothing in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” Last, in John 15:7 Jesus says, “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.”
2. Prayer Works Only for Christians
Why would an unbeliever bother to pray? If he doesn’t believe in God he will not pray, nor will God hear his prayers. Listen to what the bible says regarding the prayers of unbelievers. In John 9:31 we read, “Now we know that God does not hear sinners; but if anyone is a worshiper of God and does His will, He hears him.” Also in Proverbs 15:29 it says, “The Lord is far from the wicked, but He hears the prayer of the righteous.”
Therefore, prayer is a work only for believers. We have that task, that mission and we must be faithful in it!
3. We Christians Are Commanded To Pray For Our Leaders
1 Timothy 2:1-2 says,
First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, in order that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.
4. Our President And Our Country Has Real Specific Needs
God wants us to pray specifically for those needs, one at a time. If we don’t pray we can’t expect God to bring positive changes to our country, “to heal our land” (2 Chron. 7:14).
5. If We Pray We Can Expect The President (And Anyone We Pray For) To Be Encouraged And Strengthened
Yes, there has been many testimonies where someone has been helped by the prayers of others. In 2 Corinthians 1:8-11, Paul wrote that he and his companions were helped by the “prayers of many.”
For we do not want you to be unaware, brethren, of our affliction which came to us in Asia, that we were burdened excessively, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of life; 9 indeed, we had the sentence of death within ourselves in order that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead; 10 who delivered us from so great a peril of death, and will deliver us, He on whom we have set our hope. And He will yet deliver us, 11 you also joining in helping us through your prayers, that thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf for the favor bestowed upon us through the prayers of many.
