Why Disrespecting the President Will Bring Punishment from God

Since President Trump got elected as President there has been a continual uprising of disrespect for authority and lawlessness—especially against him. It is a growing evil that must be stopped. But since these are the last days, I have a feeling that it will continue.  For many of us it is quite sickening.

Recently (9/23/2017), after President Trump, at a rally, called out football players who refused to stand for the opening flag ceremony as a show of respect for our country—saying that the owners should fire them—NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell called the President “ divisive.” On the same day LeBron, because of a similar incident called Trump a “bum.” And Los Angeles Laker star Kobe Bryant tweeted that his (Trump’s) name alone creates division and anger.

My comment on the above is that President Trump is boldly speaking the truth and they can’t handle it—so they lash out at him in disrespect. That is shameful!

And the worst thing that is happening in our country is that those who are most visible, and are seen as stars and heroes, show the worst disrespect. Here are 15 example from Breitbart.com:

15 examples of celebrities who have used pointed, violent rhetoric to attack the president and other Republicans.

Well, what does the Bible say about how we should regard the President and all government authority? A good passage for this is in Romans 13:1-2.

Let every person be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. 2 Therefore he who resists authority has opposed the ordinance of God; and they who have opposed will receive condemnation upon themselves.

Let me break this down for you and offer a few comments.

Verse 1. Everyone is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. (Titus 3:1 tells us that we are to obey the rulers over us.) Also we read that the existing authorities are established by God.

My commentary. President Trump is our authority figure and so his presidency has been set up (established) by God. For those living in the United States, God put Donald Trump in office as our President.

Verse 2. Whoever resists authority opposes the ordinance of God (opposes God), and God has declared that they will receive condemnation upon themselves.

My commentary. It is clear to see that since Donald Trump is President, whoever resists his words to us—whether they are by Tweets, speeches, or executive orders—are resisting God. And as a result of their thoughtless and rebellious behavior, they will be punished. God will in His own way and time punish them for their disrespect.

It saddens me to know that I don’t think people are aware of what they do and say. They don’t fully realize the position President Trump is in and who has put him in power. And certainly they don’t realize what punishment they are putting on themselves. The same can be said of a child disrespecting a parent. They do it ignorantly, not knowing that they will receive a punishment in themselves (read Exodus 20:12).

In some countries the authority figure demands honor and will inflict punishment on anyone who does not give him respect and honor. So people respect him out of fear. But the United States, being a free country, places no such demands on people. We let people do what they want. We give people a choice as to whether they want to respect our government leaders or not. However, the consequences of our choices are still in place. Just because people don’t choose to respect authority doesn’t mean they are free from the consequences. This I think is something we have failed to relate to our people. For it seems that too many think they can treat leadership any way they want and not be held accountable—and this includes their disrespectful words.

Government leaders (and all people in leadership positions) are responsible to know how to be good leader and also how to command respect in people. And they will be held accountable by God. But all of us who are under authority, we are also responsible to know how to act toward our leaders—to be respectful. For our leaders are put in place by God to help us and aid us. And it doesn’t matter whether we like them or not, or whether we agree with them. We are commanded by God to honor them.

Thanks for reminding us about Romans chapter 13 — it is authoritative and it outranks whatever political opinions and preferences we may have at the individual or group level. The word “power” in the (KJV) phrase “powers that be” is the Greek noun EXOUSIA which refers to legitimate authority, and can be translated “jurisdiction” In other words, all human authorities are jurisdictionally limited, God-delegated authorities. So long as earthly “powers that be” operate within the limits, that God providentially delineates for them, they should be both respected and followed. Notice how much lawlessness, anarchy, and hatred for authority teems in America today. Sinful mankind hates to be told what to do, unless the instruction is to do evil (see Romans chapter 3). This tidal wave of wickedness is yet another illustration of how true Romans chapter 3 is, as well as Romans chapters 1 and 2. DO I agree with everything President Trump says or does? Of course not. (For example, he should be backing Alabama’s former Chief Justice Roy Moore, the defender of the 10 Commandments and Biblical marriage, in the Republican primary, in my opinion.) But that does not excuse me from obeying Romans 13:1-7. May God bless the USA, even if that includes a Goshen-like selective providential “house cleaning” (and Senate cleaning)!

Excellent post. The Lord puts people in power whoever He wants. The Lord put Obama in the White House to embarrass the United States and to expose the wicked left wing in this country. The Lord put Trump in the White House to help restore the greatness of the United States and to expose and destroy the wicked in this country.
